Biomass Production and Quality of Twelve Fast-Growing Tree Taxa in Short Rotation under Mediterranean Climate
نویسندگان
چکیده
Sustainable production of lignocellulosic biomass for energy use can contribute to climate change mitigation. This work aims compare the twelve fast-growing woody taxa belonging Eucalyptus, Casuarina, Populus and Paulownia genera, quality their its valorizing through transformation into pellets, as well effect crop on soil. Over course two rotations, plant growth were assessed. The yield aboveground dry ranged from 9 61 Mg ha−1 year−1 (equivalent 137–867 GJ year−1). highest yields obtained Eucalyptus clones (51–61 N-fixing species Casuarina equisetifolia × euramericana (‘Adige’ ‘AF2’) also achieved high (28–33 year−1), though significantly smaller than those eucalypts. Due low wood density, fortunei was not very productive in terms (18 despite good diameter height. However, some management practices, such removing nutrient-rich poor-quality fractions (leaves thin branches) harvested crop, by taking account all nutrient inputs outputs, ensure sustainability cultivation systems improve degraded soils.

Harvesting Short-Rotation Poplar Plantations for Biomass Production
Nacrtak In Italy, short rotation forest has become very popular in recent years, with over 4,000 hectares already planted – almost exclusively with clone poplar. The study models the performance of modified forage harvesters on a range of short-rotation poplar plantations, identifies technical obstacles to the deployment of these machines and suggests solutions that may expand the capability of...
متن کاملQuality of trace element contaminated soils amended with compost under fast growing tree Paulownia fortunei plantation.
The use of fast growing trees could be an alternative in trace element contaminated soils to stabilize these elements and improve soil quality. In this study we investigate the effect of Paulownia fortunei growth on trace element contaminated soils amended with two organic composts under semi-field conditions for a period of 18 months. The experiment was carried out in containers filled with tr...
متن کاملDeployment of Tree Resistance to insects in Short Rotation Biomass Plantations
Short rotation woody crop (SRWC) plantations use fast-growing tree species (such as Populus and Salix) grown under intensively managed conditions much like traditional agricultural crops (Dickmann and Stuart 1983). Typical rotation age ranges from 3-15 years, with the end products including energy and paper (pulp) products. Operational biomass plantations currently use a limited number of clone...

Nordh, N.-E. 2005 Long term changes in stand structure and biomass production in short rotation willow coppice. Doctor’s dissertation. ISSN 1652-6880, ISBN 91-576-6919-8. Short rotation willow coppice (SRWC) is a recently commercialised agricultural crop in Sweden, producing biomass for energy. The expected lifespan of a SRWC plantation is more than 20 years, or at least 5 harvests. Consequentl...
